An advanced diagnostic system for improved determination of risk of intracranial
aneurysms
There are no reliable clinical or imaging criteria to determine which unruptured
aneurysms are at risk. There is also no consistent method used to determine which
unruptured aneurysm to treat. Hence, success in based on state-of-the-art and
innovative imaging, computational and engineering technologies to predict the risk of
rupture of intracranial aneurysms, to create an accurate diagnostic tool for the
estimation of the risk of intracranial aneurysmal rupture.

Intracranial aneurysm disease and the use of CFD
Along with the use of advanced cross-sectional diagnostic imaging, such as MRI and CT,
the finding of an intracranial aneurysm is often incidental and nowadays increasingly
made. As soon as an intracranial aneurysm is identified, raises the question, whether to
treat or to only observe the further evolution of a lesion.
The role of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for understanding and predicting
aneurysm disease and for planning and assessing endovascular treatment continues to
evolve. A summary on current CFD role and medical imaging as seen from our clinical
practice will be provided and a critical discussion would be welcome.
